Oregon Students now need 'overall' score to pass tests

Oregon's State Board of Education recently changed its writing and mathematics problem-solving test methods, requiring students to pass tests with an "overall" score.

In the past, students had to meet a specific test score in different areas of one test; now, the students' sub-scores will be added into one composite score on which they'll be judged.

The new method is "a much more accurate indicator of student achievement," said Norma Paulus, former state schools superintendent.

The new tests will first be given to this year's high school sophomores, who are required to pass all four of the state standardized tests to earn a Certificate of Initial Mastery, the test of the state's new benchmark standards.
