FAQs - Testing and Evaluation
What does your testing cover? The evaluation provided by Sharper Mind Centers is an objective comprehensive test involving graphics, drawing, writing, reading, instructions, and emotional aspects. It tests all 5 Critical Brain Programs, and many other aspects. Its goal is to find the specific area of the deficiency. Many children labeled as ADD or ADHD are found to be actually dyslexic, or lacking in some other critical brain program development. For a more detailed overview on the testing concepts, see that section of the website. The process usually lasts around 3 hours. Do one or more parents need to be present during the testing? If the child's parents are married, both are required to be present during the evaluation. If the concerned parent is single, they are asked to bring a trusted friend or one of the child's grandparents with them to observe the test and with whom they can discuss the results afterwards. At the beginning of the session, the person doing the testing will ask questions of both parents to get a broader perspective on the child. The nature of the test is such that the deficiencies are generally obvious to the parents and observers, and the appropriate course of cognitive mental therapy can be discussed. Parents find the results truly eye-opening. Compared to other psychological or psychiatric tests (fees of $800 - $1,000 are not uncommon), the Sharper Minds evaluation is priced very competitively (click here for specifics). This is payable at the time of the evaluation. We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card. If an additional person is evaluated at the same time (add an extra hour per person to the in-office portion of the evaluation), the fee is substantially reduced. There is a non-refundable deposit required at the time the appointment is scheduled. This will be deducted from the total evaluation fees at the time services are rendered. Will my medical insurance pay for the testing? Sometimes Yes. It depends on several factors:
However, medical insurance reimbursement should not be a factor as to whether or not you have your loved one tested. If you wish to request reimbursement, the best route seems to be to do the evaluation, then submit a copy of the statement with the codes to your insurance company for reimbursement. The worst they can say is "no". Sometimes they will say "yes". The Centers are not in a position to bill insurance directly and the services must be paid at the time of the testing. Billing insurance is a time consuming and expensive process. The Centers would rather focus on your family's needs. Where can I get more information on the testing process and your program?
